Yes, The Hollywood Sign was sold on Ebay in 2005 for a whopping $450,400. That seems like a lot but when you consider the fact that it is the biggest piece of Hollywood history to ever exist (literally and figuratively), you can see why someone might want to shell out the cash. The sign was first erected in 1923 and was later replaced in the 1970’s. It remained in storage for 25 years before it’s Ebay sale.
We’re not talking about the Monty Python movie. Someone on Ebay actually said that they had acquired the meaning of life, the purpose of all existence. Surprisingly enough, the auction ended on a bid of $3.26. So it seems that Ebay’s buyers weren’t all that interested in unlocking the secrets of the universe, or more likely, they thought the seller was big fat liar. We still don’t know what the meaning of life is, unfortunately the buyer and seller kept it to themselves.
Oh but not just any grilled cheese sandwich. This grilled cheese sandwich is special. You might even say it’s a miracle. Why? Because the toast marks on one side of the bread bore an uncanny resemblance to the Virgin Mary. This is among the more famous weirdest things sold on Ebay. The seller even stated that she had kept the sandwich for 10 years, with no mold ever formulating in the bread. It ended up selling for $28,000 to GoldenPalace.com with intentions to take it on a world tour. A runner up for strange bread items sold on Ebay is this piece of French toast half eaten by Justin Timberlake.
Just as the grilled cheese sandwich spoke to people’s faith, this cornflake spoke to their patriotism. What made this corn flake special was its shape, which resembled the great state of Illinois. The corn flake sold for $1350, which is quite impressive given the cornflake’s fragile and biodegradable nature. The buyer had planned to put it in a travelling museum, which presumably includes other foods in the shapes of states.
Proving that anything Star Trek related will make money, regardless of how gross it is, William Shatner’s Kidney Stone was once sold on Ebay for $25,000. The stone was purchased by Goldenpalace.com, which has made the winning bid on more than a few of Ebay’s strangest items. Shatner donated the proceeds to habitat for humanity.
Only in Texas. This barbeque pit, sold in 2015, is made out of a converted oil tanker. It is 76 feet long and is composed of seven smoke stacks. It also has a walk-in cooler, beer taps, 24 doors, and a fire box with a heat controlling tube. It ended up selling for $350,000 to someone who likely has an army of hungry carnivores to feed.
In 2008 following a devastating divorce, Ian Usher decided he had had enough of the life he had made for himself and decided to sell it on Ebay. The package deal included all of his worldy possessions including his vehicles, house, and everything in it. He even attempted to sell his job. It all went for a cool $300,000. Following up, it seems as though Ian made a good decision. He set out to travel the world with his fresh start and completed a 100 item bucket list. He ended up finding love once again and spent his remaining money buying an island in the Caribbean.

Bridgeville, California was sold on Ebay in 2002 for $700,000. The town was sold by the Lapple family, who had owned it since 1973. For a time, it was sold to a religious group called the Pentecostal Faith Challengers who described it as a rural slum. They fixed the place up as well as they could but eventually the Challengers vacated and the Lapples retook possession of the town, putting it up for auction on eBay soon after. It was sold to an Orange County mortgage broker, who then sold it for a profit.
In 2003 the Mars rock Zagami was auctioned on Ebay. The meteor fell to the earth in the 1960’s landing in Nigeria. Since then it had changed hands a number of times and was displayed in a Nigerian museum. It was sold for $450,000 to someone who probably believed it would give them super powers or something. For being entirely from another planet, this item earns its place among the weirdest things sold on Ebay.
